Microsoft has just announced a colossal investment of 10 billion dollars in a new data center dedicated to artificial intelligence in Portugal, more precisely in Sines, on the Atlantic coast. This massive commitment makes Portugal a key player in the European race for AI infrastructures and highlights the strategic importance that society attaches to computing power.
The future center, developed in partnership with Start Campus, a Portuguese developer of data center parks, and Nscale, a British specialist in AI infrastructure, should house more than 12,600 last-generation graphics processors (GPUs). This equipment will allow Microsoft to deploy and host large-scale artificial intelligence models, offering unparalleled performance for its cloud services.
Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, highlights: “This project positions Portugal as a reference for responsible and large-scale AI development in Europe.”
Several factors explain this strategic choice:
For Microsoft, this infrastructure means strengthening its position in the global AI race. For Portugal and Europe, this is a strong signal: data centers are becoming strategic assets, and tech giants are now concentrating massive investments there.
For digital marketing and creative professionals, this evolution will have direct consequences:
Microsoft should soon detail the construction schedule and the commissioning of the various phases. The initiative could also attract other cloud and AI players to Europe, creating a real ecosystem around Portugal. For creative and marketing professionals, it will be crucial to follow these developments to anticipate new opportunities and tools related to AI.
