Prometheus: The Return of Jeff Bezos as Co-CEO of an AI Startup

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is officially returning to an operational role by joining Project Prometheus, an artificial intelligence (AI) startup. According to several sources, he will take over the co-direction (co-CEO) alongside Vik Bajaj, an experienced physicist and chemist, former member of Google X.

Colossal Resources from the Start

The project is off to a very strong start: 6.2 billion dollars have already been raised, some of which by Bezos himself. This sum places Prometheus among the best funded AI start-ups in their early stages.

A vision: AI for the “physical” economy

Unlike many AI companies that focus on digital data processing (text, image, language), Project Prometheus focuses on AI applied to manufacturing and engineering.
The targeted fields are broad: computers, automotive, aerospace...
On LinkedIn, the start-up describes itself as “AI for the physical economy.”

A High Level Team

Project Prometheus has already recruited nearly 100 people, including researchers from prestigious AI organizations such as OpenAI, DeepMind, or Meta.
The choice of Vik Bajaj as co-CEO is also very strategic: Bajaj worked at Google X, which reflects a certain taste for “moonshots” and ambitious technologies.

Ambitions & challenges

Meaning of the Return of Bezos

This is the first time since he left his position as CEO of Amazon (in 2021) that Bezos has taken an important executive role. This massive bet reflects a long-term vision; Bezos seems not only to want to speculate, but to build AI infrastructures that are sustainable and integrated into the material world.

If Prometheus succeeds, it could redefine AI not just as a digital tool, but as a driving force in modern industry and manufacturing.

In conclusion

Project Prometheus is undoubtedly one of Jeff Bezos' most ambitious bets since leaving Amazon.

By positioning itself at the intersection of AI and “physical” engineering, the start-up could open a new era: that of AI no longer confined to the virtual, but deeply rooted in the real world of machines and factories. However, the challenges are huge: the cost, technology, monetization, and competition are very high.

Whether Prometheus will keep its promises remains to be seen.
